The European Court of Justice has dismissed an appeal by Ukraine against an order for it to pay the legal costs of President Viktor Yanukovych and his sons. This ruling follows an earlier success in which the General Court found that the European Union had acted unlawfully in imposing a number of sanctions on President Yanukovych and his sons in 2014.

Joseph Hage Aaronson LLP has written to the Swiss authorities to ask that they withdraw or clarify reports on CHF 70 million of frozen assets insofar as it suggests that CHF 70 million of frozen assets are owned by either President Yanukovych or his son, Oleksandr Yanukovych, which is simply not the case.

As a result of the intervention of Joseph Hage Aaronson LLP, the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the CHF 70 million Ukrainian assets frozen by Swiss authorities in December 2016 comprises the assets of over 20 individuals listed in the relevant Swiss Ordinance. The press release of 9 December 2016 does not comment on assets belonging to President Yanukovych or Oleksandr Yanukovych individually.

This decision confirms that the retention of the data held in respect of President Yanukovych and Oleksandr Yanukovych is contrary to and that all international police cooperation via Interpol's channels in this case would not be in conformity with Interpol's Constitution and Rules.
